you may want to look at the netbsd tprof (no manual, but see
usr.sbin/tprof/README), or the older pmc(1)/(9) frame work
which both provide a API for userland to access the perf regs.

it will require a kernel change.

eeh's trap suggestion could also work just fine, and would
probably be simpler, but i think the above are better frame
works to deal with.
