Possibly incorrect SCSI termination.  Note that many older Sun3 boxes
have the SCSI connector wired with an incorrect TPWR pin (termination
power is grounded instead of +5V).  I have seen this cause smoke!
Typical solution is to use a cable with pin 25 not connected, and
get termination power from the last peripheral on the cable.

You might also try the PROM monitor diagnostics:
At the monitor prompt, type: x
Then run the "bootpath" test.
(I forget what it looks like)
