Well, it's a poor little 3/50 after all.  Does it have only 4MB?
If so, compiling the kernel (or any gcc run) will make it swap
like mad...  and if you turn off DMA in the SCSI driver, that
swapping will take a very long time.  As always: "buy more RAM"
