New kernel made all the difference! It booted first time. Not quite to the
point where I could telnet into it but close enough.
Seems that you need an empty /etc/fstab file to be present otherwise the
rc script exits. (Worked this out by running the nfs daemon in debug mode
on my L***x box and checking which files were being opened.)
