Thanks to everyone for your suggestions.  Time to do some research.  
Started searching on the Web for ESDI, SMD, etc.  Quite a few vendors 
& resources out there.  I'll keep you posted.

In the meantime, we'll see what is on the existing RA81 - found a 
company that has replacement optical sensors for the drive.
