Sounds like the problem I had.
(Actually, it was like this:
        1111 1111
        1111 0000
back:   1110 0000
        1101 0000 (very fast)
        1100 0000
goto back;)

Seems the 3100 may want pure DEC423 (no longer content with 232);
use the DEC-MMJ at the terminal too.
