You should be able to find older releases under
ftp://ftp.netbsd.org/pub/NetBSD/NetBSD-archive/

IIRC the bootloader from 1.5.3 doesn't load elf kernels. I think
I was able to install my newly compiled kernel and userland with
the 1.5.3 installer though.
