I agree with the previous poster that the best route is to install 
NetBSD 3.0 with a custom stripped-down kernel.

2 gigabytes. I've had a successful install of Ultrix 4.4 on 9 GB IBM 
disk on my VS3100. (4x2GB partitions)
IIRC, you need to tweak the installer (one of the tab-files in /etc) 
since it's not a standard size "RZ" disk.
If you get hold of an Ultrix/vax 4.5 copy let me know. ;)
