Non-Zero exit status in "tar xzf"

hi,

it seems that tar, or gzip is slightly broken on vax:

# tar xzf mod_perl-2.0.4.tar.gz
tar: Cannot identify format. Searching...

# echo $?
1

the files are extracted fine, but the non-zero exit status breaks
pkgsrc, for example.

the system is a native compiled netbsd-5 but it occurs with binaries
from netbsd-daily, too.
