I've used devices like the SCM PCD-50B five slot SCSI card adapter. One 
can be seen here, with dmesg:

The only issue with this specific one is that the VLC wouldn't boot with 
it set to SCSI ID 0, but boots fine with it set to 1.

On many other machines, including a couple of 4000/60s, I use ACARD 
SCSI-IDE adapters. Several also have IDE-SATA adapters:

4000/60 with SCSI-IDE and IDE-SATA:

4000/30 (VLC) with PCD-50B. Note each slot in the device is a separate LUN 
and multiple cards can be used simultaneously:
