| I get SIGILL from bitmask operations with invalid bit numbers quite easily
| in gcc. Compiling tcsh from pkgsrc is a simple way to trigger it.

Can you run gdb on it and see where it comes from? This will need to be
fixed in the compiler.
Not sure if it's the same error I have, but for me, I get a crash in cc1.
Here is as much as I've extracted so far:
Gnat:usr.bin/make# make CC=cc
# compile make/job.o
cc -O1 -fgcse -fstrength-reduce -fgcse-after-reload -std=gnu99
-Wall -Wstrict-prototypes -Wmissing-prototypes -Wpointer-arith
-Wno-sign-compare -Wno-traditional -Wa,--fatal-warnings -Wreturn-type
-Wswitch -Wshadow -Wcast-qual -Wwrite-strings -Wextra
-Wno-unused-parameter -Wno-sign-compare -Wold-style-definition
-Wsign-compare -Wformat=2 -Wno-format-zero-length -Werror
--sysroot=/ -DMAKE_NATIVE -DUSE_EMALLOC -c -Wno-format-nonliteral
/usr/src/usr.bin/make/job.c
