OK, so now I have done a re-wiring of the network so that the laptop and microVAX are not separated by a switch. The switch is only feeding the systems in the entertainment centre. I can still not get a ping response from anybody at the vax console, but everybody that I have tried can ping the vax. The home gateway is at 192.168.2.1 and the microVAX is at 192.168.2.30. For clarity, yes I have proven that it IS the microVAX replying by shutting it down and getting no response to pings. Now I get a new output from wireshark: 11 1902.418773061 Sagemcom_03:3c:20 Broadcast ARP 60 Who has 192.168.2.30? My question is why would it issue a DNS lookup when I am using a hard-coded private I{P address? cheers, Nigel -- Nigel Johnson, MSc., MIEEE, VE3ID/G4AJQ/VA3MCU Amateur Radio, the origin of the open-source concept!
