Yes, something like that is exactly what I'd expect. But there is  
complete silence from the Adaptec adapter even when I pull disks,  
reinsert them and in general try to trigger some reaction.

No, sorry, "silence" is not true. There is an acoustic alarm from the  
RAID controller itself... but that really doesn't help me much for a  
remote system in a hosting facility ;-)
