"After abandoning UNIX in the late 1980s as a self-contained
time-sharing system unsuitable for modern distributed environments, Bell
Labs 1127 developed two further operating systems, Plan 9 and Inferno,
with completely new kernels and new or substantially reworked programs
in user space. Both systems emphasise portability. Following a brief
summary of that alternative universe, I shall explore various aspects of
