FWIW I think I last used BSDOBJDIR etc 10+ years ago.
I tend to use something like:
MAKEOBJDIR='${.CURDIR:S,${SRCTOP},${OBJTOP},}'

I didn't follow the conversation, how is this patch relevant to BUILDID?
