Ah, I was trying to not modify the driver code/Makefile thinking that
it would be another conditional that needed to be per platform and
thus fragile. I got too sensitive about that with all the ELF2AOUT
and ELF2ECOFF mess recently :-(
So my approach was to make the old server code look more like the
new one, so that new drivers compile unmodified.
