don't use IO_APPEND. In the vdev_file.c we end up appending to our virtual
file as a filesystem! With this change:
$ dd if=/dev/zero of=disk1 count=266144
$ zpool create crap $PWD/disk1
mounts /crap and it seems to work ok, until I try unmounting
