Um, wake up.  I already pointed that out.

No it's not.  Every single i386 user who uses X is using XFree86,
except for a handful of people probably still using XS3.  And XFree86
installs in /usr/X386 unless you rebuild it with different paths.

   it should be done in /etc/rc.local, by the sysadmin, when X is
   installed.

I *vehemently* disagree.  A standard package should not require any
magic on the sysadmin's part to make it work.  Besides that, ldconfig
should be run long before rc.local is.
