I'm actually going to try and recompile/rebuild with 1.4.2 and
1.4.x-current kernels, to see if they still work.

So, FYI, as I think i mentioned, i was previously able to run a
-current kernel with PCIBIOS et al enabled.  so If there is really a
problem in that code on my laptop, it's relatively new.
