All the other? Statements like that always require background work
before posting to public lists, you know... I also think it would
have been sufficient to e-mail me in private rather than cc a list.
Here's a look at what I have currently installed:
hrothgar:~> ll /usr/pkg/etc/rc.d/
total 4
-r-xr-xr-x 1 root wheel 188 Aug 13 19:35 samba.sh.sample
-rwxr-xr-x 1 root wheel 85 Mar 4 2000 snmpd.sh
-r-xr-xr-x 1 root wheel 202 Mar 19 2000 squid.sh
-r-xr-xr-x 1 root wheel 263 Mar 4 2000 sshd.sh
Those all came from packages. I only followed the example (except
I didn't really like ".sh.sample"). The snmpd.sh script seen here
comes from the net/ucd-snmp-current.
This is from a machine where I rebuilt all packages on October 8th:
pyry:~> ll /usr/pkg/etc/rc.d/
total 4
-r-xr-xr-x 1 root wheel 188 Oct 8 14:00 samba.sh.sample
-r-xr-xr-x 1 root wheel 284 Oct 13 22:16 snmpd.sh
-r-xr-xr-x 1 root wheel 202 Oct 8 14:28 squid.sh
-r-xr-xr-x 1 root wheel 886 Oct 8 09:56 sshd
The snmpd.sh script seen here comes from net/ucd-snmp, and nicely
matches what the net/ucd-snmp-current package used to create. I'd
think that's called "element of least surprise", if nothing else.

| Um, is there a special reason to make this one's name end in .sh, while
| all the other pkgsrc startup scripts don't?
