     Because it provides for additional clarity.  Without the "extra"
comma, you can't determine if "c and d" is to be treated as a single
entity or two seperate entities.  If you consistently use commas to
seperate items in a list, then it is explicit how "c" and "d" are to be
treated.  Of course, whether or not you use the "extra" comma depends
on who taught you English and when.  I always use it for the reason of
clarity.
