Valid concern, but there is a third way: use neither softdep nor wapbl, while dealing with migration, upgrades and potentially broken kernels. It's the same argument you're making - opening the window between softdep and wapbl, rather than switching fstab directly, but entirely under user control. In fact, this could be the default result, if a now unknown "softdep" mount arg in fstab was a NOP or warning, rather than an error (not sure what the current behaviour is). -- Dan.
