I'm sorry, but I don't understand what you said : you wrote a
NetBSD tool ("e2fs") ? I don't find it; neither on my system
(NetBSD-1.4.1/i386), nor in the package tool.

I did not find any option about ext2fs fs in newfs(8). What do
you mean when you say 'they just built natively' ?
