That depends on how you define "standalone".

I have an i386 box that uses dosboot, so that a small FAT partition is
available to hold the 3c5x9cfg program and some other non-NetBSD emergency
tools.  The kernel is in /stand/netbsd (with a symlink from /netbsd) and the
booter is in /stand/dosboot.com with a /stand/autoexec.bat.  As you've
probably guessed by now, this /stand partition corresponds to the DOS C:.

I've seen other systems where /stand contains similar bootstrapping stuff;
UnixWare comes to mind.
