My Sun3 had a CD-ROM...  16MB HP300s can have CD-ROMs...

One way its better... allows you to put a richer installer on the  
media.  Even on large memory machines, you're limited by the amount  
of available KVA for the ramdisk.  (On large memory machines, KVA is  
actually tighter, because more KVA is used for the data structure  
that manage the memory...)
