Why not just dump the separation into variables completely, and just put
the @(#) header in the version string directly?

IIRC, the reason it's separate and done as an array is so that SCCS
get/put on the newvers.sh file would not try to do something with the
remainder of the line.  We don't use SCCS, so why keep this kludge?
