what was the primary reason to switch to TCP mounts for the defaults ?
As I understand it, UDP mounts should be faster for local servers (which
is the most common case IMHO), but I may have missed something.

Given the current breackages involved by TCP mounts, I think we should revert
to UDP mounts for the default. With a -current kernel, a fstab entry or
amd.liste which worked for 1.3.3 will now break when the server reboots.
This is very bad (and the 'proto=udp' amd option is not obvious).
