The apm API is too narrow even for the i386.
(It is designed for APM v1.0 or v1.1, but doesn't support
APMv1.2 features like multiple batteries or wakeup on certain
events.)

So I don't think it is a good idea to base any interface which
calims to be mi on the current apm.
