I need more of 'do not try to upgrade to faster speed
if read on slow speed succeeds'.

Yes, I want, thanks :) I've started looking at SCSI-2 specs
and NetBSD scsipi subsystem. So far, I discovered the SCSI commands to
get/set
error recovery mechanism of the device, but I haven't yet found anything
to actually adjust the speed of CD-ROM drive :-/
