8 might be enough if we didn't lose 1 for "entire BSD partition" and
another for "raw device" (*c and *d respectively).  i.e. we don't have
8 partitions, we only have 6, available for use.  Take one for swap and
one for root, that's 4 for "other things".  Pass the bucket please.
