Well, when I did my 16-partition changes for the sun3 and sparc, I put
the "extra" 8 partitions into otherwise unused space in the disklabel,
space the bootblocks appear to pay no attention to.

Seems to work fine in practice.  Of course, it means you can't boot
from one of the "extra" partitions, but there's not much to be done
about that.
