How about making this per-process flags that e.g. a vmware (netscape,
...) wrapper script can set as appropriate, and then all sub-processes get
the changed names?

Also, it seems Solaris has a setuname command... (though it does only
allow changing /etc/nodename and .. i forgot ;).
