and the 8 kBytes of buffer memory mentioned earlier is not enough for this.
Would be less then 3 full-length packets per direction. I suspect that
the receiver is losing packets while any processing at splnet() happens.

Look at netstat -s for tcp; I guess that you see lots of retransmissions
on the machine that does the pushing.
