I can reproduce the problem myself too. Which was the reason that I backed
it out: I could verify 100% that only reverting the timed_thaw change
made things work again (no other changes).

If I had had the time to look into it, I would have done that first,
but unfortunately I didn't. I can test patches, but can unfortunately
not spend much more time on it right now.
