Is there any way, from userland to discover which files have been mapped
   in the current process memory, and where they have been mapped?

isn't there something in /proc?
   
   It seems to me that the only way is digging VM structures in /dev/kmem,
   which require root privileges. Anyone see another way?

that would be 'group kmem' not 'root.'
