Yikes!  Can you spell "hack"?

I personally don't think systems programmers should ever be allowed to
upgrade systems, at least not unless they also have a heck of a lot of
operations experience and know that an upgrade that serious can only be
done safely and properly by building a new machine and then moving the
users and data over to it, either transparently if the types of services
allow, or with properly scheduled downtime.  [0.25 ;-)]
