I happened to test something different on FreeBSD 4.6.2 and experimented
a bit with floppy disks:

'mount' happily attaches read-only media as writeable. If I try to write
to this disk, the driver constantly complains about the same fsbn 19 to
not be writeable whenever sync() is called (every 30 seconds). I cannot
even use 'umount' successfully.

The error messages look very similar to NetBSD and also mention
'ST1 2<write-protect>', which indicates that the status of the r/w tab
is detectable by the software.
