fwiw, my way already seems somewhat better...

first, the old way:

	# sysctl hw.cnmagic
	hw.cnmagic = \x27\x02
	# sysctl -w hw.cnmagic=\'^B
	hw.cnmagic = \x27\x02 -> \x27
	# sysctl -w hw.cnmagic=\'^B
	hw.cnmagic = \x27\x02 -> \x27
	# sysctl -w hw.cnmagic=\'^B
	hw.cnmagic = \x27\x02 -> \x27

now the new way:

	# sysctl2 hw.cnmagic
	hw.cnmagic = \x27\x02
	# sysctl2 -w hw.cnmagic=\'^B
	hw.cnmagic = \x27\x02 -> \x27\x02
	# sysctl2 -w hw.cnmagic=\'^B
	hw.cnmagic = \x27\x02 -> \x27\x02
	# sysctl2 -w hw.cnmagic=\'^B
	hw.cnmagic = \x27\x02 -> \x27\x02

and i wasn't even thinking about that case.  ;-)
