I think he means that vmem may only change the effects of the
situation.  vmem is only an allocator--in either case, many more map
entries means much more memory in use for map entries.  Perhaps the
amount of time spent managing the map entries would be less, but the
amount of memory used would be similar.

Does that make sense?
