Actually, we kinda have done it with file systems. Way back when, you 
   picked a file system for mounting by number. Now you pick it by name.
   
this is irrelevant.  we *replaced* numbers with names.  this documentation
is a new non-required component.  also "ffs\0" is about the same size as
"int" on most platforms... :-)
