I've noticed that--at least when writing lots of small files, e.g.
pkgsrc development--using the fcfs
strategy with soft dependencies yields superior performance,
presumably because softdep
doesn't play nicely with buffer queue strategies.  Perhaps this should
be added to the FAQ?
