Ok, I'm a happier camper now... I just picked up a 3Com 3C509B, and I have 
*ZERO* connectivity problems when the 3Com is talking to the cablemodem...

Gottabe some weird interaction between ne2000's (and/or the NetBSD driver for 
them) and cable modems...
