Yep, I read the code.

The code intentionally inserts the "link number" into the second group
of 16 bits.  I just find it odd and annoying to see ifconfig return an
address that isn't really what the interface is known as.

Of course, I also tend to think that "ifconfig de0 inet6" should be
needed to get an ipv6 address at all, rather than having it do so at
boot time.
