This is perhaps a problem with cardbus and your laptop.  I use an RBEM56G-100
(Xircom RealPort CardBus Ethernet 10/100+Modem 56) every day, both for
100Mbps lan access and 56K dialup (via pppd) with no trouble.  I can insert
and remove it as often as I like as well.

This is on a Dell Inspiron 5000e.
