When i do gcc -v i see:

gcc version egcs-2.91.60 19981201 (egcs-1.1.1 release)

I guess i need a newer one as you suggested?
Could you give me a hint in which subdir i should be to type make install
there to obtain a newer compiler?
Moreover, i am surprised not to find stuff about it in the makefile.
