I'm not sure it  is netmask related. 

And when  I say "it does work",  I forgot to mention  that I typically
use ospf6d from  zebra rather than route6d to  accomplish this. I have
found route6d a bit unweildy, since it doesn't always play nicely when
you try to run, say, zebra bgpd  on the same box...  But then that's a
different problem...
