I'd guess that an invariant/requirement has been violated.  A big
issue in most code, BSD included, is that the data structure
invariants and the requirements for calling procedures isn't
documented.  So I'd be inclined to add comments with the rules.

Is the backtrace from the panic at all illuminating?
