whois.iana.org says no .local TLD exists.  Given that, I think it is a
very bad idea to support anything that by default acts otherwise.

Mind you, I would (as if anyone cares) certainly support efforts to get
.local reserved for site-local uses like this.  But until that happens,
I think we shouldn't do things like this.
