Yeah but maybe you missed this part:
"Watching the network from my Mac, I can see the RPI sending out DHCP
requests, and I can see my router replying:"
I take that to mean he's watching from a 3rd machine in the subnet,
not the Pi itself, which means the Pi is on WiFi and past the WPA
connectivity part.
I agree that starting from a static setup is a good idea to eliminate
DHCP itself as a cause.
