There's a lot of good ideas here (see, www.debian.org), we should
look at borrowing a few of them.

Constructing list of files to get...
want: dists/stable/non-free/binary-i386/net/cucipop_1.21-3.deb (30k)

Approximate total space required: 30k
Available space in debian: 1004161k
Do you want to select the files to get [n]:

Do you want to download the required files [y]:
Downloading files... use ^C to stop
Connecting to debian.vicnet.net.au...
Login as ftp...
Setting transfer mode to binary...
Cd to `/debian'...
getting: dists/stable/non-free/binary-i386/net/cucipop_1.21-3.deb (29992)

Processing downloaded files...(for corrupt/old/partial)
dists/stable/non-free/binary-i386/net/cucipop_1.21-3.deb

Do you want to install the files fetched [y]:
Installing files...
dpkg: considering removing qpopper in favour of cucipop ...
dpkg: yes, will remove qpopper in favour of cucipop.
(Reading database ... 15431 files and directories currently installed.)
Unpacking cucipop (from .../net/cucipop_1.21-3.deb) ...
Setting up cucipop (1.21-3) ...
Updating /etc/inetd.conf to disable old pop-3 daemon and add cucipop.

Though cucipop normally runs as a standalone daemon (for speed), it
can also be run from inetd. This may be desirable in some cases, for
security or for preserving system resources.

Run cucipop from inetd (instead of usual standalone mode)? [N/y] y

Editing /etc/inetd.conf to enable cucipop...done.
Editing /etc/init.d/cucipop to prevent daemon mode ... done.

To run cucipop standalone, comment-out its line in inetd.conf, then
change "run_cucipop" from 0 to 1 in /etc/init.d/cucipop.

Here is the final state of the pop-3 service in inetd.conf:

pop-3 stream tcp nowait root /usr/sbin/tcpd /usr/sbin/cucipop -Ya

Do you wish to delete the installed package (.deb) files? [y]:
